The Week in Puzzles!

For today’s post, I’ve gathered a few tidbits from around the world of puzzles to keep you informed. We’ve got puzzles to solve, a discount code, a new crossword tournament in 2027, and more!

This past weekend, I shared a puzzle in honor of several celebrities who passed away last week. But I wasn’t the only constructor who made a puzzle to celebrate the life of a beloved icon.

George Barany constructed a super-sized puzzle (23×22) in honor of music icon and humanitarian Dolly Parton.

You can click here to solve the puzzle, entitled “Bidding Bye Bye Backwoods Barbie.”

It’s a multi-page printout because the puzzle is loaded with trivia and references to her life, career, and accomplishments. It was clearly a labor of love, one that George kindly allowed me to share with all of you.

A new crossword tournament has been announced for 2027, as crosswords are coming to Canada!

The Canadian Crossword Open will be held on June 5th in Toronto! And they’ve already got constructors announced for the event.

Emma Lawson, Will Nediger, Ada Nicolle, Jess Shulman, and Nam Jin Yoon are all constructing for the tournament.

Not only that, but they’re hosting an open submission contest for Canadian constructors to contribute a puzzle to the inaugural tournament. Click here for more details!

Did you know that September is Sudoku Month? (At least, according to one calendar I saw.)

Well, apparently it is, and our friends at Penny/Dell Puzzles are running a promotion all month!

They’re offering a 15% off discount code on all Sudoku magazines, subscriptions, and value packs.

Just use the code “ilovesudoku” on their website to receive your discount and indulge in some Sudoku solving!

It’s always important when a constructor identifies a gap in the market or a group that is being underrepresented in puzzles.

Construct Robin Stears (a previous contributor to The Inkubator, Women of Letters, and several These Puzzles Fund Abortions collections) recently lamented the lack of an outlet featuring women-focused crosswords.

So she decided to create one herself.

Go to her Patreon to sample her Midi puzzles highlighting the accomplishments of women. You can download PDFs or solve digitally with puz versions of these 9×9 crosswords.

It’s a worthwhile endeavor to be sure, so please check it out.

What’s New in the Holiday Puzzly Gift Guide?

It’s Black Friday, and I’m sure you’ve already been bombarded with emails and posts promising deep discounts and sales galore.

We could do that too. I mean, we’ve got terrific deals on puzzle bundles for all of our apps… but then again, we do that all the time. We’re nice like that. =)

And plenty of the companies that have products in this year’s Holiday Puzzly Gift Guide are going all out with discounts today as well.

If you sign up for their newsletter, Puzzometry is offering 21% off their puzzles. Calliope Games (makers of Tsuro and 12 Days and other great games) have great discounts, as do our friends at Penny Dell Puzzles (like their Winter Holiday Fun Pack!).

Don’t worry, we’ll be sharing every offer we find on social media to help you out today as well!

So instead, I thought I’d take this opportunity to discuss some of the new products in this year’s Holiday Puzzly Gift Guide. There were so many cool additions to the guide this year that it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

For instance, not only is there now a digital version of the terrific Crosswords Club puzzle subscription service, but there were tons of new puzzle magazines worth your time!

This year we also had a big contingent of UK companies included in the guide. A lot of cool puzzles and games are being developed across the pond these days, and we were happy to include them.

And anyone who has been reading the blog regularly knows there are a few companies that are part of the gift guide every single year. We’ve partnered with our friends at Looney Labs, ThinkFun, Project Genius, and Bananagrams for the better part of a decade now, and we practically couldn’t have a gift guide without their puzzly contributions every year!

As the lead blogger for PuzzleNation, the gift guide is one of my favorite projects all year. As you’ve no doubt noticed, I absolutely love spreading the word about great puzzles. (It’s what brought me to PuzzleNation in the first place: top-notch puzzling!)

So every year, I also throw a few of my own favorite puzzles and games into the guide. This year was no exception:

Good News: Discounts, Reschedulings, and Puzzling from Your Couch!

This week’s blog posts have had something of a theme, since both concerned activities that can be conducted from home, whether it’s for personal enjoyment or to stick it to the man, politically-speaking.

Even in a blog dedicated to the oft-delightful world of puzzles and games, it’s hard to ignore the current worldwide crisis.

But, as always, puzzlers find a way to thrive, and so today, I am overjoyed to bring you a blog post full of optimism, creativity, and community.

Firstly, I want to give a shout-out to all the companies, creators, and puzzlers that are putting their products out there at a discount or on a Pay-What-You-Want basis (and sometimes for free!) to help distract home-bound bodies from the unpleasantness and uncertainty going on around us.

The awesome team at DriveThruRPG (and the many marvelous contributors who post there) and your friendly neighborhood puzzle app makers at PuzzleNation are among those throwing the digital doors wide open.

So be sure to support them, or local businesses, or artists you love online, or any other small businesses or entrepreneurs during this trying time.

Secondly, for a bit of hope on the horizon, the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament has been rescheduled!

Yes, the Nerd Olympics have been pushed to the weekend of September 11th through the 13th, while all payments for the tournament on the original date are being refunded.

Of course, September is pretty far away, but worry not! If you’re looking for a bit of puzzly community from the comforts of your own home, intrepid puzzlers Brian Cimmet and Ryan Hecht are hosting an event this weekend.

It’s called Crossword Tournament From Your Couch, and it’s an online, live-streamed crossword solving event! Volunteer constructors have created puzzles for you to solve, and the top three finishers will compete in a virtual playoff puzzle for the enjoyment of all!
